The pages of Backdoor Influence present an archive of unscripted musings, yearnings, and passing comments collected from everyday life and paired with quiet line drawings. These words and illustrations come together in surprising couples: sometimes cheeky, sometimes evocatively inexplicable, even romantic.

The provocative writing—phrases muttered by friends or overheard from a stranger and recorded by Fernan’s hand—belies a closeness ultimately incomplete, without attribution, and interrupted by decontextualization. The drawings fill these very absences, locating and grounding these resonant sentences in images rather than people. Imagine: entering a party through the backdoor, removed just enough from a scene to glean fragments of conversations and observe the activity; these acts of listening and looking are Backdoor Influence.
